IB Teacher Salary Guide 2026: What You Should Actually Earn at PYP, MYP, and DP Schools
Global 2026 IB salary bands by region, curriculum programme, and experience level — plus how to spot a below-market offer.
The International Baccalaureate is the closest thing to a global salary benchmark in international teaching. IB-experienced teachers command a consistent premium over national-curriculum peers, and the gap has widened since 2023 as PYP, MYP, and DP programme growth outpaces the supply of trained IB teachers. This guide breaks down what an IB teacher should actually earn in 2026.
The IB premium is real
Across the major recruiter platforms, IB-experienced teachers are paid roughly 8–15% more than equivalent national-curriculum teachers in the same school. The premium is largest at DP (Diploma Programme), smaller at MYP, and smallest at PYP — reflecting how scarce experienced DP teachers are in almost every subject.
2026 IB salary bands by region
| Region | PYP (monthly USD) | MYP (monthly USD) | DP (monthly USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middle East (UAE/Qatar/Saudi) | $3,800–$5,200 | $4,200–$5,800 | $4,800–$7,200 |
| Singapore / Hong Kong | $4,000–$5,500 | $4,500–$6,200 | $5,200–$7,500 |
| Europe (Switzerland premium) | $3,500–$6,500 | $4,000–$7,500 | $4,500–$9,000 |
| Southeast Asia | $2,800–$3,800 | $3,200–$4,400 | $3,800–$5,200 |
| Latin America | $2,200–$3,200 | $2,500–$3,600 | $3,000–$4,400 |
| Africa | $2,600–$3,800 | $3,000–$4,200 | $3,500–$5,000 |
Subjects that pay above their band
Not all IB DP subjects are equally scarce. In 2026 the subjects reliably clearing the top of the band are Physics, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, Chemistry, Economics, and Computer Science. English A remains the most competitive slot to hire into but rarely pays a subject premium because supply is deep.
What a full IB DP package looks like at a tier-1 school
- Base salary: $5,500–$7,200/month tax-free (Gulf) or $4,800–$6,500/month with tax (Asia/Europe).
- Housing: provided or allowance $1,500–$3,000/month.
- Flights: annual return for teacher plus dependents.
- Medical: comprehensive family coverage.
- Tuition: 50–100% for up to two children.
- Professional development: 3–5 IB workshops funded across a two-year contract.
How to spot a below-market IB offer
Compare three data points before you sign: (1) base salary against the table above, (2) whether the tuition benefit covers your actual number of dependents, (3) whether the school pays for your IB training or expects you to arrive already trained. Missing any two of the three usually indicates a school still building its IB reputation.
How to increase your IB value
- Get examiner training. Becoming an IB examiner adds a documented specialism to your CV and, at some schools, a modest stipend.
- Layer categories. A DP teacher who has also taught MYP is more employable than either specialist alone.
- Move up the framework. DP Coordinator roles pay $7,000–$11,000/month at tier-1 schools and open leadership pathways.
"The single fastest lever on IB pay is not experience — it's programme breadth. Teachers who can credibly teach across two IB programmes get better offers, faster."
Negotiation script
When a school opens with an offer near the bottom of the regional band, respond with: "Based on comparable IB DP roles I'm seeing at [region] schools this cycle, I'd expected a base closer to [top-of-band figure]. Is there flexibility on base, or would additional professional development or tuition places bridge the gap?" This phrasing almost always moves the school either on base or on benefits.
